Overview
Al-Hasakah is a major city in northeastern Syria and the capital of Al-Hasakah Governorate. It lies on the Khabur River at its confluence with the Jaghjagh, making it an important agricultural and road junction in the Jazira region.
The modern settlement was established in 1922 as a French military post and expanded with the arrival of Assyrian refugees during the mandate period.
History and Culture
The city grew as irrigation projects transformed the surrounding plains into one of Syria’s key farming areas. Its population includes Arab, Kurdish, and Assyrian communities.

The Khabur riverbanks and the historic Citadel Hill area mark the city’s core and its early French-mandate foundations.
